Guidelines to be a better Engineer or a better professional:
Improve writing:
Starting a new Blog would be a great way to do this. You can use either WordPress or Blogger for creating your own Weblog. Most of us will have a starting trouble. (It took me two months to publish a blog post after I created my account). We’ll think – “Oh my god! What am I going to write? I’ll wait till an idea comes to my mind.” My own experience has taught me that if one thinks like this most probably he won’t begin blogging or he’ll end up taking a lot of time to publish his/her first post.
My advice would be – Start blogging this very second. Write about anything that you did, either on your computer or on something else. If you cooked something, blog about it. If you find something interesting, blog about it. You found a cool new website? Blog about it. Blog! blog! blog! Don’t worry about it being good or bad. Just blog! You’ll improve with every post!

Two great blogging platforms!

Improve typing:
Whatever you are going to do in your life, let it be Engineering, Medicine or any other field, you’ll need to document whatever you are doing. Have you ever been frustrated when you have got loads to write up and you are slow in typing? Beginners wont know the importance of typing fast. I myself am a beginner but my new blog has compelled me to improve my typing speed.
Don’t know if you know about this or not – There is a particular way in which you place your fingers while you type. You can even type fast without looking on the keyboard if you follow this pattern. Use online tutorials to learn this.
One thing that can help you more than these tutorials is, after learning how to place your fingers, to follow this pattern in whatever things that you type. Don’t go back to your “single finger tying technique.” I started typing this way and now I can type much faster than my friends who just practice these tutorials but don’t use it when then type anything else. If you don’t practice how can you win? Come on buddy! Warm up your fingers! Start typing faster!
Build your resume:
Make it now itself using LaTeX . Download Kile or any other LaTeX environment to make your resume. Use the moderncv template or any other good templates if you can find. You can even learn LaTeX if you want. Try the Not So Short LaTeX Guide.
Get good resumes of good students, also of people working in the best companies. Find out what they did and try working like them. Keep adding whatever you do to your resume. This can give you satisfaction as well as an urge to improve it by doing more things.
Learn how to use computer as an effective tool:
Search engines, multimedia, presentations, graphics, website, blog etc. Learn how to effectively use all these for your good. Photoshop, dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, PHP etc. Try to learn a little bit of everything even if you are not a Computer Science Engineer. All these will help you a lot.
Learn your subjects:
Find out what subjects the students in the best universities (like Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Yale etc… to name a few) are doing the same course as mine are learning and find out their assignments and solve it;See video lectures to learn difficult subjects or for subjects with boring teachers. Use sites like http://nptel.iitm.ac.in/ or from ocw.mit.edu
Do hands on work:
Do stuff like practical electronics project. Download a circuit from web, buy the components and build it. Then blog about it. Give step by step details.
Read books and technical magazines:
Magazines like Electronics for you , Linux for you etc.. can be very informative and helpful for starting various projects and always keep a book with you that you can read when you get free time.
Check out best final year projects:
Check out the final year projects being done by the students in your University and also outside in the best universities, read their Thesis and get more ideas. Start thinking about your own final year projects. Meet seniors and other students who have done well. Keep contacting them and try to find out the opportunities for you.
Right on!
